[WoW] Trying out this arcane build. The idea is to use Arcane Blast as the primary damage spell (keeping the debuff stacked at 3 all the time), mixing in Frostbolt as necessary to prevent running out of mana completely. (The posts I've seen about this style suggest that if you reach 0 mana at exactly the point that the boss dies, you're doing it right.) So far it's been interesting and, yes, really mana-draining. |

day off at Tokyo Dome I may have accidentally made plans to sit with two groups of people at the game and thus I should probly write an apology to the guy who saved me a seat with his group... we met at Seibu last week and all. I came by before the game to say hi to him and chatted for a while but told him I was sitting in the front row with some crazy people. One of the guys in his group told me that his wife just gave birth to their first kid yesterday. I was like "Congrats... WHY ARE YOU HERE TODAY???" Did pinbadges. Ran into Crazy Kensuke Fan, this lady from Sapporo who follows the team all over the place. She has a ton of pinbadges so I traded her, now I have Hichori and Micheal and Sledge and all. Then Hiromi also gave me a Hichori pinbadge so now I have two. Huh. I got my Fan Club "junior" problem straightened out... but it'll take like 3 weeks for a new card to show up. Urk. I also bought a Hokkaido jersey! I think they mischarged me though, I think I paid 1500 yen and it was supposed to be 3000 yen? Also I got a size L. Maybe I shoulda gotten M. It's a bit big on me, but I guess that's better than being small. We cheered a lot during the game and held up signs from our front row perch. Minako got a text message from her mother up in Sapporo who was watching the game, "I just saw you on TV with Hiromi and a gaijin ojosan, all of you in green!" Heh. Jason Botts finally hit a big home run (and thus we did the Ponyo cheer with "homerun" in it) and Ryan Glynn actually got a win, so they were game heroes! The Fighters beat the Marines 4-0 and it was a lot of fun. Micheal got the save, and Kaneko got 2 hits, and it was all around good. Kamagaya Ojisan said that I am like a Fighters fan "idol". I was like "nono, I am a mascot". The game was really quick, over by like 9ish. I stopped off in Akihabara on my way home to change trains and found the arcade Phylicia had mentioned with the Pop'n cellphone straps in the UFO catcher and wouldn't you know, I got one on my first try too. Funny that. I talked to my dad on Skype for a while when I got home, hence why I didn't write an entry last night. Now I am back at work. Whee. |

tomato disasters and hindu weddings This weekend, Tyson and I were down in NJ for a coworker's wedding. His family is from India whereas she's from NJ so they had a Hindu and an American wedding. Since we were on the gooms side, we spent most of the time trying to keep up with the gaggle of Indians and all their traditions. Most of them spoke English and they were all quite friendly. We had traditional dances the night before. And I got a henna drawing on my hand. The wedding was all in sanscrit, so we couldn't quite follow that. Our friend did finally get up the guts to ride a horse to the brides house as is traditional. The horse was elaborately decked out, but had the temperment of a lump of clay, which was kind of funny. All in all, it was quite a fun experience.
Yesterday I came home from work to find my tomato plants fallen over. My best guess is that since it finally stopped raining, the bases dried out and then they tipped over because of all the long branches pointing away from the house. The tomato plants were all interwoven between the cages, so we cracked a few and pulled off green tomatoes trying to get them back upright. We rotated them 180 degrees so the house will give them support for now. |

The Day That Keeps On Giving As a housewarming gift, the world appears to have given me a gift basket overflowing with amusing items: 1) McCain forfeits the nerd vote. In responding to a claim of plagiarism, McCain's proxy Michael Goldfarb said, "It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman's memory of war from the comfort of mom's basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others." (emphasis mine). My kind has been quick to respond. 2) Emily and the Uncanny Valley. Image Metrics, the folks behind the excellent animation system in GTA 4, have developed what looks like a new process of motion capture and facial animation that appears to overcome the Uncanny Valley. I'm curious how much disparity there can be between the facial actor and the final character, but the video is nothing short of amazing. 3) Meet the Sandvich! I haven't been playing TF2 for a while, but I've been loving the stuff they've added. But nothing has been as hysterical as the page and video for the Heavy's new unlockable shotgun replacement: The Sandvich! It's funny in exactly my sort of fashion - so much so that one of my coworkers asked if I had secretly written it. 4) Punch 'Em In The Dick! It's a stupid song, but there's something oddly charming about this TOTALLY NOT WORK-SAFE song's intensity. Plus, how could I not love a song with the lyric "Scrotum? Hell, I damn near killed'um!" EDIT!5) Also, Photographically Enhanced Video! Just before I head out, I'll share this video, wherein highdef photographs and low-quality video are combined to produce amazing results, using what I can only assume to be Science and Witchcraft. I'm no photographer or cameraman, but I suspect this will be of extreme interest to anyone who is. |

inappropriately tired & d2x I slept plenty last night and the night before, but I was dragging yesterday and am not entirely with it today. Not sure why. *shrug*
I got my pilot roommate started on diablo 2 a month or so ago. So last night I got the expansion and joined in. He has 2 sorceresses. For variety I have a necromancer (planning on fire golem/lower resist/bone spirit as my main skills) and a paladin I plan to make a vengeance / convixtion primary, to match up with his sorcs.
I seem to have a fascination with the sacred and profane chracter classes. =) see also warlock and paladin being my main WoW classes of choice. |

All Ok post/during TS FAY So tropical strom Fay has delivered a ton of rain and wind but nothing major so far. The kids are home with noel today and hopefully still sleeping. I am at work. It was a little annoying last night since we didn't bring in any of the outside stuff so i keept hearing the ladder banging against the side of the house from where it was hung behind the laundry room. Ugh. Finally i turned on the weather channel and fell asleep around 1:30-2 am. Everyone else passed out between 8:30 and 10...
Hopefully the flooding won't be too bad in the living room. I have got to fix the threshold and front door. I am sick of having a randomely wet floor where the rain comes under the threshold and under the vynil tile to pop up randomely under the couch etc. |

you know when.... you have enough cucumber that it can be measured in linear feet, it is time to make some cucumber salad. I hope Derek wasn't joking when he said he liked sejw's spicy thai cucumber salad. because 8ft of cucumber is now salad. and this isn't even the ones from the farmshareofdoom. these are from my aunt's garden. 4 cucumbers, 3 of which were longer than 24 inches. along with a bunch of cherry tomatoes, and a spectacular eggplant. (matte skin, purple, with angular streaks of subtle green, round fruit, aprox the size of a typical grapefruit.) OKOKOK Recipe!Sarah's Spicy Thai Cucumber Salad (actually from one of Molly Katzen's books) thinly slice 3 cucumbers. salt generously and put in colander to strain. stir occasionally. let sit for at least 30 min rinse, and squeeze out excess water with cloth. (total water drained was at least 3 cups for 4 huge cucumbers) dressing: (which I doubled) 1/4C. hot water 1T sugar 4T white vinegar 1t. crushed chili pepper (I had aleppo, works nicely) 1 sliced scallion Current Mood: amused |

A smash hit weekend! Friday ( Read more... )Saturday ( mountain )Sunday, ( free penguins )Monday I went home; I was surprised that the border guard gave me no trouble about claiming to have been on a six-day trip when I was carrying only a nearly-empty grocery bag (my allergy meds). The only incident was on the way to the airport, a woman got on the bus, wasn't apparently all with it, then suddenly had a grand mal. Passengers immediately kept her from falling down and got her in a seat (which may not have been optimal, but better than letting her fall, for sure), got the bus to stop, and called 911. She snapped back to being merely not with it (not responding to voice, picking at herself and patting down her dress obsessively) after a few seconds. After a few minutes it was clear that the two people who were near the patient were the only two who were helpful to have on the bus, and that it would be a while before the bus could move again, so we all walked back the hundred feet to the bus stop. One guy was all indignant about how none of us gave a shit and shouldn't we call a fucking ambulance and woooOOOOoooo the ambulance drowned out the rest of his uninformed rant. |

Busy is good, right? We had so many people at archery practice Sunday that four marshals were spending more time teaching and running the line than shooting.
On the one hand - woo, more people. On the other hand - I didn't manage to shoot enough to tire myself out :(
Nine years I've been doing this archery thing. It's still a hoot.
I hit something, yes? |

weekend in chiba Went to Chiba for baseball yesterday and today. It took up my entire weekend. Yesterday rained out but before the game I interviewed Fernando Seguignol so that was cool. Today it didn't rain out and I took a lot of photos. Shunsuke Watanabe started and won and the team wore cool throwback uniforms. Got rides back to Tokyo with the Murata family both times, which I realized later is actually slower than taking the train, but a lot more comfortable and a lot better company.
Something really bizarre is that of all the things that happened this weekend -- and I was feeling really depressed/grumpy for a while today -- I found that there is no way I can possibly not be happy around Bobby Valentine.
I ended up spending about 4 innings chatting with a scout at tonight's game. That was kind of weird. He's actually kind of similar to me, only he actually has done things like worked in the Mariners scouting department. But right now his main job is English teaching in hicksville Japan, and so he put a lot of things into perspective for me.
Also, ugh, I'm totally all weird about what I can say in blogs anymore, I swear.
I forgot to eat all day and just went to Jonathan's diner for 1am dinner. Unfortunately they totally changed their menu so I couldn't get what I wanted. Had a bizarre "summer set" instead which had things like corn soup and cold spaghetti and demiglace burger and whatnot. |

I totally want to eat at Schmidt's sausage haus und restaurant. They're in Columbus, but there is no equivalent restaurant in Pittsburgh. Yes, there is Penn Brewery, but, the menu is limited and I don't remember them having something as delicious sounding as Sauerkraut-Bratwurst Balls. (I found out about it because McCain had a public appearance there.) |

Why did no one tell me about this drink before?!??!!1! Holy frijoles this is GOOD. I mean, I like ginger ale normally, and I wanted to put something in it Friday when I was outside grilling, so I randomly decided the last of the Midori would work out okay.
Then I tasted it. I suddenly wished we had more Midori in the house, it was so bloody good.
I realized that something this good probably had a name and was on a list somewhere of established drinks, so I went looking. Sure enough, there's a "recipe" - course, it's just mixing two things to taste, so not that hard, but I have a name now ;)
Fuzzy Chartreuse
3 shots Midori melon liqueur ginger ale crushed ice
Fill hurricane glass half full with crushed ice. Add midori, then fill glass the rest of the way full with ginger ale. This should result in a chartreuse colored drink. Add more midori to your taste.
Did I mention I bought more Midori this weekend....

fall 2008 schedule It's time to get ready for another school year. The summer has been way too short for my taste, but, well spent. I'm wondering how the new relationship will work with the class and homework schedule and her work schedule. I'm sure we'll work this out. She's already given me the "I will not nag you to do homework" talk and the "You will not prioritize me over homework" talk. Since she's been through that before with other SO's, she just wanted to state these upfront. She graduated with a 3.89, which I find amazing. (Wooster and Anthropology if'n you're wonderin'.)
The schedule I drew up for myself sort of sucks on paper.
Womens' Issues and Ethics: 9am MWF Black Filmmakers: 3pm MW Intro to visual culture: 8:30 TR History of the Modern Middle East: 12:45 TR Persuasion: 2:15 TR Linguistics: 6:30pm T
On Mondays and Wednesdays I have a huge gap in schedule that looks like I can get a lot done, but never seems to work that way. Tuesdays and Thursdays are really busy once I add in the student government and Gateway (old people group) association meetings. And one class at 9am on Fridays. Joy. Maybe I'll work those hours on Monday and Wednesday. Seems reasonable to me.
One bonus is that the Persuasion prof LOVES ME, so I anticipate that class going well. I haven't had the other profs, yet, but I hear good things.
On to the possibility of getting things done today. |

New Cat Toy I spent the better part of this afternoon constructing a new plaything for my cats. When I finished I put some catnip on the sisal to encourage them to use the new post rather than the couch.
Their reaction:
The recipe: 1 roll of sisal Scrap Berber carpeting 4 lag bolts and washers 4 2.5" wood screws 2 2x4x36" pine studs (cut kindly by the guy at Home Depot) 1 12x24 plywood piece
Material cost: $18 Time: 4 hours, but much of the delay was due to waiting while my wimpy 6v drill recharged between pilot holes. |
